According to data released today by Statistics Canada, average weekly earnings including overtime for non-farm payroll employees rose in June in the province to $1,003.53. That was up 1.9 per cent from May and by 5.2 per cent from June 2009.

Calgary’s population growth trickled to its lowest levels since the recessionary days of the early 1980s, as more people fled the city than moved here in the last year, according to civic census results released Thursday.

The 2010 census, which showed only 0.57 per cent growth, reported the smallest single-year population increase since 1984, when Calgary struggled under plunging oil prices and the population actually decreased.

Housing sales were down 30% in July from a year ago, and the Canadian Real Estate Association blames the drop on the new harmonized sales tax in Ontario and British Columbia.  The Ottawa-based group, which represents 100 real estate boards across the country, said July sales fell 6.8% on a seasonally adjusted basis from the previous month, a decline "almost entirely the result of fewer sales in British Columbia and Ontario," where the HST went into effect on July 1.

A high inventory of homes for sale combined with a softening demand from potential homebuyers is starting to put downward pressure on Calgary MLS prices

No major industrial real estate projects are expected to come online between late 2010 and early 2011 in Calgary until development costs decrease and market lease rates increase, says a report by CB Richard Ellis. This coupled with continued positive absorption (the change in occupied space) could push vacancy rates below three per cent within 18 months, says the commercial real estate company. The vacancy rate is currently 4.6 per cent.

Calgary's overall office vacancy rate declined in the second quarter, but is expected to rise in the coming months as more new space hits the market. A report by commercial real estate firm Avison Young in Calgary said the overall market vacancy rate fell to 10.7 per cent, down from 11 per cent in the first quarter but up from 9.3 per cent a year ago. Calgary is above the national average for office vacancy of 10 per cent.
